The night at the Ord River was cold as we are now a long way from the sea and have to suffer cold (less than 20°C) nights but still get 30°C during the daytime.
Breakfast at a camp is always different as we have no power for the toaster, so this time we had pancakes with Maple sirup or Chocolate sauce for the kids. The campfire was kicked into action again by our neighbours who were just settling in for another day or two. We had another little morning chat before we hit the road for our short (265km) trip to Kununurra. Our first stop was only a few kilometers on at a little Aboriginal settlement with a Roadhouse called Turkey Creek. The Diesel there was $1.62/lt - one of the most expensive on this trip. After a brief stop we continued our journey through some breathtaking scenery of high cliffs, green valleys and rolling hills - absolutely stunning. However, not everyone in our car saw the scenery on offer due to shut-eye.
At the junction of the Wyndham - Kununurra road we pulled into the rest area for lunch so we could eat the remaining fruit and vegetables before going through the Kununurra fruit fly zone. On the 45km trip from the junction into Kununurra we saw the push bike riders we first saw in Coral Bay - it's amazing how we run into the same people on this trip. Coming into Kununurra is very nice as road is over a dam wall with 100% water level, something we haven't seen in a very long time. Kununurra is lush and green, water is available in abundance and all free of charge. At the caravan park we are encouraged to was cars and vans and use as much water as possible, that's something we've never experienced before.
After setting up the caravan we met up with our travelling companions Ron and Vicki before heading into town for food supplies and to book our tours at the information centre. Just on sunset we drove up to Kellys Lookout, a big hump at the back of the township, and enjoyed the great views of lush green irrigation pastures surrounding this town. I hope tonight I'll get a good long sleep as I'm still trying to catch up sleep we didn't get on our cruise through the Buccaneer Archipelago.
